Friends of Franz Podcast S1 E24: Parents and Pediatricians with Dr. Krupa Playforth (The Pediatrician Mom)
According to a 2022 salary report by Weatherby Healthcare, pediatricians are the second-lowest paid physicians in the United States, just earning a grand higher than public health. As our guest explains, the field of pediatrics is not as esteemed in America relative to other countries where pediatricians are fairly compensated and regarded as specialists. This is an astounding statistic, given the breadth of expertise pediatricians possess in caring for our little ones. From infancy vaccination series to developmental milestones, to schooling attitudes, to child abuse, and to ever-soaring rates of teenage depression, the field of pediatrics is one that is filled with so many nuances and complexities. The biggest myth being that children are just small adults, Dr. Krupa Playforth (more known as "The Pediatrician Mom") joins us in this episode to unfold how this is farther from the truth.
Educated and trained at Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Georgetown Universities, Dr. Playforth now stands as a board-certified pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics in Northern Virginia, where she treats children and adolescents of all ages.
What happens when parents' preconceived notions of what is "best" for children, alongside their cultural preferences, conflict with the evidence-based practice and theories held by the pediatrician? Do children of single parents and same-sex parents develop differently than the traditional mother-and-father household? How does technology affect children's development? Are children more susceptible to the side and adverse effects of vaccines? As an expert in the field of young ones, Dr. Playforth shares her views based not only on her expertise as a doctor but as a mother herself. Truly, she is The Pediatrician Mom.
