Friends of Franz Podcast S1 E14: Aesthetic Medicine with Dr. Jacqueline Zhai

Victims of physical accidents are definitely subject to excruciating pain and injury. A variance of craniofacial deformities, differing degrees of burns, and both shallow and deep abrasions are usually what come to mind in events of trauma. Indeed, the human body does a great job of self-healing and regeneration of the harmed skin and tissue to an extent. However, many times, the sufferer is still left with two scars: physical and psychosocial. Lingering thoughts of threatened self-confidence as they see their now-altered physical presentations in front of the mirror can hinder them from living their life to the maximum. Potential waves of perceived thoughts about how others view their appearance only exacerbate this wounded psyche. Thankfully, the field of aesthetic medicine seeks to harness the byproducts of evidence-based science and medical technology to restore what was once lost and reinstate what is now displaced in the human body.

Specializing in Family Medicine and obtaining advanced training in aesthetic medicine, Dr. Jacqueline Zhai, based in Vancouver, Canada, now stands as an associate clinical professor, consultant physician, and owner and physician expert at Sparrow MD.

As a field expert, Dr. Zhai speaks to us about how the common stigma against the field of aesthetics as being solely "pure vanity" is as erroneous as it can be. Despite the "glamorous" procedures of facial contouring, neuromodulators like Botox, dermal fillers, hair restoration therapy, the pursuit of anti-aging, and even the simplicity of a skincare regimen, Dr. Zhai reiterates that the backbone of her practice is to restore and help others in achieving the harmonization of both their skin and their well-being. Aiding victims of motor vehicle accidents, physical abuse, burns, and the like by targeting scars and facial asymmetry, Dr. Zhai believes that securing a facet of mental health care via the maintenance of aesthetic physical care is truly self-care.
